sorry, i dont often look over the profile pages for that information (looking usually at the file info under the image itself for focal leingth and exposure). im suprised tht this came out of the 5D, i usually dont expect that with this type of photography, i'd be intresting to see what you could do in this type of situation with a 40D (much better ISO performance and speed) and possibly an 85mm F/1.2 Lens.

the 5d is a really good camera, dunno whats the problem? for me 1600 is enough, this was taken with 1600 iso actually... and the camera is very fast too. I used the zoom lens there (70 - 200, 2,8). the thing is, without frontlights it doesnt really matter what lens u use cause the guy will always be in the shadow hehe.

i agree, even as a Nikon shooter that the 5D is a very good camera, but usually its not one used for this kind of shooting. and yes, 1600 ISO is enough, but using a faster lense and being able to shoot at 1.2, 1.4, or 1.8 would allow you to use a lower ISO and get less Noise (though granted this particular image doesn't appear too bad as far as Noise). that is also another advantage of the 40D it has the built in flash which will alow a little fill light into the subject, though in this case i like the look of the silluette!
:icondragonlady1:
I have en external flash but I dont like to use it so much for concert pics as it mostly destroys the atmosphere, specially if the lights are good anyway... u can use it tho, of course. And maybe it would have been nice here but the problem is: my flash is broken for the moment so I am waiting to get it back from repairing hehe ;) + an inbuilt flash wont work with a zoom lens as the one I have cause it will make ugly circles on the image, as consequence of the shadow of the lens (dunno if it makes sense but I think u know what I mean hehe)

I know a few live photographers who use the 5d, some of them even professionals who live from it and their pics are amazing, so I guess its not only about the camera, its also about if u have an eye for it... there is no sense in using a super expensive high end cam if the person behind it doesnt know how to use it (I have seen that sometimes too). I know a few colleagues who even use a 350d and their pics are amazing too.

we are talking about the lens then no? the one is used here is very fast, usm and it has an image stabilizer too, in fact the lens is worth more than the camera haha.

I am sure the 40d is a great cam too but I like the 5d more for having full format :) if there will be a follow up to this one (or the 40d) I might think of getting it if I have money, lets see.

I guess its just a matter of taste, as said I have seen great pics with the 40d, with the 5d and with nikon as well, just depends as well on the user :)

Comparing 5D and 40D is strange. The 5D is more professional-like, has the advantage of being full frame...

I won't doubt between them, I would choose the 5D.

And as you said, the lens attached and the skills of who's behind the camera really do the work...

BTW, excellent pic, drummers are a hard target for live shooters (always far, not well lightened...)
